Aims and Objectives

Company

To engage students in work-related learning through paid work experience funded by the Outer Shirley Regeneration Fund. The initiative was to reward students from an area of deprivation (Shirley, Southampton) by giving them the opportunity to experience paid employment for a 4-week period over the summer holiday.

School(s)

Students had to have improved school attendance, grades and attitude to be considered for the project, and it was also about raising aspirations.

4 students worked at BHS
2 students worked at J Sainsburys

A separate retail project allowed the students to pilot the Introductory Certificate in Business, Retail & Administration during their work experience.

Time Invested by the Employer

Initial meeting with Solent Skill Quest (1½ hours)
Weekly meetings and reviews (4 hours)
On-going training and supervision for students (28 hours)

Outline of Activity Undertaken

Students completed the Introductory Certificate for Business, Retail & Administration gathering evidence and witness accounts during their normal working day. Subjects included: Health and Safety, Customer Service, Undertaking Retail, Researching the Sector.

Results of Evaluation to meet Aims and Objectives

Six students started the certificate, and 4 completed.
Start date - 1 August 2004 Completed by - 31 December 2004
All achieved Distinction.
All four completers/achievers felt they had benefited from the experience, in particular the achievement of a qualification prior to completing GCSEs.

Conclusions

Feedback from the school was that it was outstanding; it had made a difference to the students’ confidence and attitudes, and they would like more students to achieve the certificate (unfortunately there was no funding for Solent Skill Quest to continue the pilot).

Future Plans

We are working with other partners to promote vocational learning with work experience and promote BTEC qualifications.
